Half Day
Walking Tour of Stellenbosch
This guided walk with a local tour guide will start at 14h00 from the University
and will end at the Bergkelder for a wine tasting.
The historic town of Stellenbosch, the second oldest in South Africa, developed
from a colony of settlers to whom land had been granted on the banks of the
Eerste River. The name Stellenbosch was given by Governor Simon van der Stel
who, in 1697 encamped here with his entourage. The avenues of oaks are lined
with Cape Dutch, Georgian and modern Victorian architecture of which many are
now national monuments and are jealously guarded for future generations.
Experience the atmosphere of historic Stellenbosch by following the footsteps of
the founding fathers. See how the early Europeans lived in the 1700s and during
the English occupation of the 1800s. Visit ‘Die Braak’, (Village Green), and
listen to the story of the prisoners who went to Australia rather than the Cape,
the influence of the missionaries of the 1800s and the abolishment of slavery in
1838.
The walk ends at the Bergkelder, the famous ‘cellar in the mountain’. One of the
most advanced and the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, this cellar
was built in 1968. The Bergkelder hugs the steep slopes of the historic
Papegaaiberg mountain. In the tranquil atmosphere of our underground
bottle-maturation cellar, thousands of bottles of wine are laid down and guarded
over serenely by old French oak maturation casks. These casks bear carvings of
various famous Cape wine landmarks. Here you will taste arguably the best
Sauvignon Blanc wines that the Cape Winelands can offer.
