Cape Town and the Western Cape is one of the world's most spectacular destinations. In 2004 it was chosen as the Best City in Africa and one of the world’s top 8 creative cities by Newsweek in 2002. Blessed with wildlife, natural beauty and some of the most magnificent scenery, imaginable, it’s not hard to see why Cape Town and the Western Cape have been described as “heaven at the tip of Africa”. The Cape has mild Mediterranean climate all year round. Summer stretches from October to March and delegates can revel in 11 hours of sunshine daily and the balmiest of evenings. Within walking distance of the CTICC is the internationally acclaimed Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. On the doorstep is Table Mountain and within an hour's travel are South Africa's leading tourist destinations - Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Robben Island, the Cape Winelands and Cape Point.
Tourist information about Cape Town is available at: www.tourismcapetown.co.za or www.aboutcapetown.com.
Flying to Cape Town South Africa has an excellent infrastructure of airports, with airports in all of the major cities. The three main airports are Johannesburg International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Durban International Airport. Most of the major international airlines offer flights to South Africa with Johannesburg International Airport and Cape Town International Airport being the primary destinations. Some of the major airlines which currently offer flights to South Africa are: Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, South African Airways and Virgin Atlantic. South African Airways is a member of Star Alliance. The Star Alliance member airlines offer you more of the travel benefits you want to 916 destinations in 160 countries (www.staralliance.com).
There are a number of airlines which offer flights between the main South African cities, as well as routes to most of the smaller cities. Each of the airlines offer varying prices and special offers which are largely dependent on the day of the week and time of day of the flight. You should be able to find a suitable flight and time from amongst the six providers.
Pre/Post-Symposium Tours Participants and accompanying persons can experience other tourist attractions of South Africa before and/or after the symposium. This private arrangements can be made by contacting Heinrich Beeselaar (heinrich@clubtravel.co.za). Information about possible tours is available at www.clubtravel.co.za and more tourist information about South Africa can be found at www.southafrica.net.
People interested in organised tours such as safaris are encouraged to make use of Springbok Atlas Coach Tours, which is a leader in Southern African Destination Management. They offer a full range of exciting products and services. Visit the website www.springbokatlas.co.za for enquiries and on-line bookings.
Cape Town International Airport Cape Town International Airport is located about 20 minutes (22km) from the city centre. Although Johannesburg International Airport is the main hub for flights into and out of South Africa, Cape Town International is nevertheless a busy airport with many of the major airlines flying directly to Cape Town. Domestic travel within South Africa is also very efficient with various airlines offering flights on the hour to other major cities. For connecting flights, the flying time from Cape Town to Johannesburg is 2-hours. For further details on airports, flights and flying in Cape Town, visit www.saflights.com.
Traveling from the Airport Taxis - taxis are available at the airport. They are relatively expensive with the fare's ranging from R8 to R12 per km. Confirm with your driver beforehand.
Car Rental - all of the major car rental companies have branches at the airport. You can both pick up and drop off your vehicle directly at the airport. Visit www.southafricar.com for car hire bookings.
Airport Transfer - if you have pre-booked accommodation, there is a good chance that your hotel and/or hosts offer an airport collection and drop-off service. Make inquiries when booking your accommodation. There are also shuttle services that run between the airport and popular destinations such as the city centre and the V&A Waterfront.
Airport transfers can be arranged by contacting Brett Fuller (Brett.Fuller@springbokatlas.com). Cost for airport transfer to hotels near the CTICC will be R185 per person. Payment details have to be arranged between the participants and Brett Fuller.
ACCOMMODATIONS There are more than 3500 rooms within walking distance of the CTICC, offering budget to luxury accommodation. This includes the on-site five star Westin Grand Cape Town Arabella Quays Hotel, which has direct access to the heart of the convention centre. The convention centre offers a complimentary Hotel Service, which can be accessed through the Symposium Website. Contact Tamsyn Yssel (tamsyn@cticc.co.za) for hotel bookings and enquiries. A tentative booking for rooms at a discounted rate was made at the Icon and Circa hotels (www.urbanhiphotels.co.za), which are very close to the CTICC.
